Transmission Repair

Transmission Repair Description

A vehicle’s transmission plays a vital role in proper operation. It is the component which links the engine to the wheels. It does not matter if the vehicle has an automatic, manual, or semi-automatic transmission, all of them are vital in the reliability and performance of any type of vehicle. Engine rotation speeds up as the speed of the vehicle or the load increases. This rotational speed is harnessed by the transmissions which takes the torque provided and reduces the speed by employing driveshafts, wheels, and differentials. The transmission shifts gear to appropriately match the engine speed. When gears are shifted it can change the torque applied to the wheels. Transmission fluid keeps the moving parts lubricated so they are protected while the vehicle is in gear. It also helps to keep the transmission rust free. With a manual transmission, the driver employs the clutch to shift gears. However, in an automatic transmission, it is the transmission fluid which provides this force to shift gears.

Transmission Repair Benefits

When a transmission isn’t operating efficiently, it can affect the vehicle’s overall performance. When a transmission begins to have problems, the sound of grinding gears can be heard. It can be difficult to shift gears and in some cases the vehicle can slip out of gear. There can also be a hesitation when accelerating. Sounds can be heard even when the vehicle is in neutral. With a manual transmission these noises can be a result of a clutch failing to engage or disengage properly. This can result in the gears dragging across the flywheel causing the sound to be heard. In some cases, a burning smell can occur which is an indication of an overheating transmission or failing transmission fluid.

Driving habits can impact the life of the transmission. If the vehicle is always carrying heavy loads or towing heavy loads, it can cause the transmission to wear out more quickly. Because the transmission fluid is responsible for applying the proper amount of pressure to shift gears, if it gets overly dirty, it can affect performance and cause ineffective shifting. Regular maintenance including transmission fluid change can greatly extend the life of not only the transmission but the vehicle itself.
